Blowtorch & Full Walrus to Live-Stream in ‘Virtual Reality’ Dec. 6

Press Release by Big Heavy World. Photo by James Lockridge.

New technology available to the community thanks to local collaboration.

A collaboration of two tech-heavy local organizations has brought a new resource to Burlington’s arts community: Live streaming of ‘virtual reality’ video. The technology is used to send a live stream of 360-degree video — a video feed that viewers can view as though they are inside a room, able to rotate and look in every direction.

The equipment was purchased by Burlington Telecom for community use, an acquisition proposed and encouraged by Big Heavy World. “Emerging technologies are an especially useful platform for promoting Vermont-made music,” said James Lockridge, Executive Director of Big Heavy World, “This will bring entirely new audiences to the music of Vermont, and to Burlington as an innovative tech community.”

The equipment used to live-stream 3D video uses an array of several cameras and an attached computer that stitches the images from each camera together, then encodes the stitched content in real-time for streaming. The stream can be sent to popular sites like Facebook or YouTube, and can be viewed on a normal computer screen or with a virtual reality headset.

On Wednesday, December 6, Big Heavy World will host its weekly local music radio show “Rocket Shop’ from the stage of co-presenter Arts Riot on Pine Street in Burlington, featuring the bands Full Walrus and Blowtorch. The free all-ages concert will be streamed in 360-degree video through the Big Heavy World YouTube page, broadcast live on 105.9FM The Radiator, recorded for television broadcast by media partner RETN, streamed with normal video through Facebook, and recorded for a future live album. Doors open at 7:15pm; music and streaming begins at 7:45pm. Arts Riot is located at 400 Pine Street in Burlington and is wheelchair accessible. More information about the concert can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/371417126650087/ and the Big Heavy World Facebook page is at https://www.facebook.com/bigheavyworld/

“Our fiber gigabit infrastructure makes Burlington one of the most connected cities in the country. As a community, we have barely begun to scratch the surface in terms of exploring it’s capabilities.” said Abbie Tykocki, Director of Marketing & PR at Burlington Telecom, “Community partnerships that allow us to showcase both Burlington and the power of ultra-high speed symmetrical broadband work to bring that narrative forward while helping local organizations reach their full potential. Big Heavy World has been a longtime advocate for the potential of the network as a tool for civic engagement. Their work embraces the value of leveraging Vermont artistry to promote Burlington as a vibrant and innovative community.”

The event will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of 105.9FM The Radiator, the community radio station co-founded and operated by Big Heavy World. ‘Rocket Shop’ is supported in part by the BCA Community Fund.

Blowtorch

Rocket Shop Live at Arts Riot 12/6: Blowtorch; Full Walrus = 105.9FM The Radiator’s 10th Birthday Party!

Words by Big Heavy World. Blowtorch Photos by James Lockridge.

Big Heavy World is about to get even heavier this December 6, as Blowtorch join Full Walrus on the ArtsRiot stage for the latest installment of Rocket Shop LIVE, made possible with co-presenters Arts Riot and RETN and celebrating the tenth anniversary of 105.9FM The Radiator, Burlington’s community radio station!

Rocket Shop is Big Heavy World’s local music radio hour, featuring weekly live performances and interviews from musicians from around the state. Broadcasting direct from the Big Heavy headquarters inside the SEABA Center on Pine street in Burlington, Rocket Shop airs every Wednesday night from 8-9pm on 105.9FM The Radiator. You can also stream The Radiator 24/7 at bigheavyworld.com or tune in through iTunes’ ‘eclectic’ radio section.

Breaking from its tradition of radio only broadcasts, Rocket Shop is now teaming up with ArtsRiot and guest host Paddy Reagan to present you Rocket Shop Live, a live concert series held monthly straight from the Arts Riot main stage. This week features performances courtesy of Chittenden county punk rockers Blowtorch and shoegazing art rock outfit Full Walrus

Doors are at 7:15; music at 7:45, and the show is free, handicapped accessible, and open to fans of all-ages.

Big thanks to co-presenter RETN for taping the concert for television and Joe Egan at Egan Media for recording the show! Rocket Shop Live is supported in part by a grant from the Burlington City Arts Community Fund. Be sure to keep up with podcasts of prior Rocket Shop episodes on iTunes or at bigheavyworld.com/rocketshop!

Blowtorch

Blowtorch

In the words of Seven Days’ Dan Bolles, “When attempting to describe Blowtorch’s sound, the pair is slightly more effusive but, ultimately, just as vague. Mullins writes the music and collaborates with Russell on lyrics. But that doesn’t make either terribly eager to try and define it. “I think the music has a more melodious aspect that sort of defies the category of ‘punk,'” suggests Russell. “Although it’s not pop-rock, either.” Pausing for a moment, he quips, “metamorphic rock?” before he quickly rescinds the idea. But it might actually be pretty close to the mark. Russell goes on to lay out the band’s longstanding credo: “No swear words. And no love songs.” And that, too, could be a fairly apt description, in a minimalist, punkish sort of way.” Read Dan’s article and Amelia Devoid’s recent review of the new Blowtorch LP, ‘Justice or Else.’

Full WalrusFull Walrus

Full Walrus’ music combines elements from a variety of strong influences such as Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Animal Collective, My Bloody Valentine and a number of other bands that are good! The live performance not only provides a louder and more energetic version of the songs, but also dives deep into improvisation, experimentation, and noise. A man who refers to himself as Forkster has called Full Walrus’ music quote “punchy and etherial”!

“Xenia Dunford is a BTV based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist whose sound is heavily steeped in jazz & blues but with a style all her own. A thoughtful lyricist, her songs evoke themes of love, lust & disillusionment as she navigates this crazy AF life. DAMN!” (Description from Facebook. Photo from Bandcamp.)

Old Sky is a Americana outfit located in Burlington, Vermont featuring Andrew Stearns and Shay Gestal. The two met at a local Old Time music session in 2012 and began to develop a sound influenced by their time in the bluegrass band Gold Town and working through Stearns’ repertoire of country and folk tunes.
