MATTHEW THORSEN BAND PHOTOS AT 'THE MET' - THE 90'S NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD
November City Hall Exhibition of 90's Burlington Band Portraits Brings It All Back...
MATTHEW THORSEN ( http://www.matthewthorsen.com ) is one of Burlington's unheralded cultural treasures. He's been photographing the faces of our region's newsmakers for ten years as staff photographer for Seven Days Newspaper and was the go-to person for band portraits during the local music scene heyday of the mid-1990's. His portraits range from the sublime (Construction Joe) to the overt (Yolanda), with dozens of familiar faces in-between. This special exhibition is a combination of Matt's own prints and those collected by Jim Lockridge of Big Heavy World; as a survey of the faces of Burlington's contemporary musical history, it's unprecedented. The show hangs at the Metropolitan Art Gallery in the lobby of Burlington's City Hall from November 2 through November 29. The gala opening event is Friday, November 12 at 5:30pm. Admission to the exhibit is free. Sponsored by Burlington City Arts ( http://www.burlingtoncityarts.com ), Advance Music Center ( http://www.advancemusicvt.com ), Boutilier's Art Center ( http://www.boutiliers.com ), Repro Graphics ( http://www.reprografx.com ), and Circle B Press. (A Vermont Music Library Benefit Concert featuring Patrick Fitzsimmons, Jenn Karson, and Aaron Flinn will be performed in the neighboring Contois Auditorium (also inside City Hall) during the exhibit opening. See above). For more information about this exhibit contact redshift@bigheavyworld.net. This event is accessible to persons with disabilities. For information or to request accommodations, call Alyssa Todd at (802) 865-1140 or Vermont Relay Service at (802) 253-0195.

FOR ***VERMONT*** MUSICIANS:

CALL TO >HEAVY< ARTISTS: 'BOX OF NAILS' IN PRODUCTION
BHW Label Crew Welcomes Punk/HC/Metal/Rawk Submissions...
Help us represent the the heaviest, deepest subterranean music of Vermont by submitting tracks to the 'Box of Nails' compilation CD project. Any heavy style of tune is invited for consideration. The project will benefit Big Heavy World and bands on the disc should be down with the idea that tolerant is the way to be and that everyone should be self-aware and make smart choices. It's funded through a grant by OVX (Our Voices Xposed, http://www.ovx.org ) so trax with swearing can't be used; also sponsored by Soundtivity ( http://www.soundtivity.com ) Copierworks of Vermont, and Advance Music Center ( http://www.advancemusicvt.com ). The art's being done by the graphic meisters Keith and Seth at Kelliher Samets Volk. We've got $ and album art, so bring on the music! Send it to: Box of Nails c/o BHW, P.O. Box 428, Burlington, VT 05402. Email Nina at xemoxstarx@hotmail.com for more info.

CALL TO ARTISTS: STATEWIDE VT MUSIC JUKEBOX PROJECT UNDER CONSTRUCTION
More "official" details to come, but here's the preliminary note-to-yourself to make: GET YOUR CD'S INTO VERMONTMUSICSHOP.COM RIGHT NOW! Artists with inventory in the shop will be invited to participate in a BHW project to bring Vermont-made music to the information areas (rest stops) throughout the Interstates of Vermont. With support from Advance Music Center ( http://www.advancemusicvt.com ) and the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services we've got the first installations of hardware ready to bring perpetual Vermont-made music to the public address systems of the largest half-dozen information areas in the state. The whole project will continue to expand and it's a blast to put together. No matter what kind of music you make, get it to Dave Donegan at the shop (email musicshop@bigheavyworld.net for info). Then, if your style wouldn't scare grandparents, contact Skip Bourgeois ( XoTakeWarningoX@aol.com ) about inclusion in the jukebox project - there's NO COST to be included.

CALL TO ARTISTS: COBBLESTONE DELI & BHW SERVE VT MUSIC FOR LUNCH
It's a lot like the statewide Vermont music jukebox project, only different: if you have a CD title in vermontmusicshop.com and would like to have a real - not digital - copy of your CD in the carousel at the Cobblestone Deli on Battery Street (right across from Main Street Landing near the corner of Main Street) and your liner notes in a binder that customers can peruse and make music requests from, next to a computer where they could order the disc from vermontmusicshop.com... - you get the idea :) - let Skip Bourgeois know - XoTakeWarningoX@aol.com and he'll get you in there. If your music isn't in vermontmusicshop.com yet, contact the shop manager, Dave Donegan, at musicshop@bigheavyworld.net and make it happen!

JANUARY '05 BUZZSAW COLLEGE RADIO MAILING ANNOUNCEMENT
Skip Bourgeois and Craig Batstone are also the men to connect with if you're up for having Big Heavy mail 200 of your CD's to college radio stations across the country. Drop off 200 CD's and $200 at the office (215 College Street in Burlington, above Pure Pop) and in late January we'll be sending the Big Heavy World BUZZSAW box of love with your CD in it, and getting station phone numbers to you to do some D.I.Y. tracking if that's your thing. All genres welcome - it's college radio after all. Skip and Craig's email addresses are XoTakeWarningoX@aol.com & craig.batstone@mymail.champlain.edu

YOU IN THE BAND GUIDE, THE SHOP, AND THE VT MUSIC LIBRARY?
Bands and solo performers: Check to see if you're in the VERMONT BAND GUIDE at http://www.bigheavyworld.com/bandguide.php. If not, send info to us through the form at the top of the web page. Your CD in inventory at VERMONTMUSICSHOP.COM, http://www.vermontmusicshop.com ? (Search for your band name or title on the main page). If not, email Dave at musicshop@bigheavyworld.net and he'll tell you how to make it happen.

ARTISTS/PROMOTERS: HELP US?
Big Heavy World is a dinky nonprofit with normal-sized bills. We might have 50 people volunteering here to promote and archive Vermont-made music, but since there's no such thing as a "Big Heavy World Tax" we have a tough time keeping the lights on. You can help if putting shows together is your thing - If you've got the friends and connections to produce benefit shows to help us do what we do, please know we'd luv to feel the luv. We support ALL Vermont music, inclusively, so if you're brave enough to step forward and support, know your effort would be appreciated beyond words. (Thanks!).
