BIG HEAVY WORLD AND STRAIGHT TALK VERMONT THROW DOWN *THE BANG!*
EIGHT BANDS HELP CELEBRATE BHW'S 7TH BIRTHDAY AT MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM
$1000 High School Music Program Giveaway / 1st Annual POOPY! Awards
Big Heavy World and Straight Talk Vermont have smashed together eight Burlington bands for a giant all-ages live music birthday bash on Saturday May 24, 2003. Big Heavy World turns seven years old and to make it a party we're bringing this frigate to dock on the main stage of Memorial Auditorium for a straight-up all-ages rockout. Thanks to the sponsorship of 99.9 THE BUZZ (http://www.999thebuzz.com) and HOT TOPIC (http://www.hottopic.com) we get to bring this rock concoction together: The in-your-face straight-edge punk FIGHT BACK crew (http://www.fightbackcrew.tk); intense instrumental math-rockers 13TH CHAIR (http://www.13thchair.com); hardcore spike-throwers Five Minutes Hate (http://www.assembletheremains.com); funk-driven hard-rockers SUBSIDE (http://www.geocities.com/subsiderocks); straight-edge punk skateboarders MY REVENGE (http://www.xmulletx.com/myrevenge); louder-than-you alt firesetters THE INTERIOR; kinetic comic-rockers MAILBOX (http://www.superpickle.com/mailbox); and FLAT STANLEY (http://www.flatstanley.4t.com/), the 2003 WINNER OF THE ADVANCE MUSIC BUZZ HOMEBREW HIGH SCHOOL BAND SEARCH chosen at the Higher Ground competition on May 11! Thanks also to support from Hot Topic and HERITAGE ENVIRONMENTAL (http://www.heritage-enviro.com), we'll be giving $1000 to the music program of the high school whose students make the most noize into the SCREAM-O-METER at the show - students should come, be loud, be proud, and score big for their school at THE BANG! It's also the first annual Big Heavy World POOPY! awards ceremony - a definitively un-Hollywood "people's choice" award presentation to the local band that Vermont musicians visiting http://www.bigheavyworld.com want to tell (loudly), "YOU DON"T SUCK!". The crew at Big Heavy wouldn't mind one of these twisted statues for ourselves... let's just say that "Barbie" has been a sport, and only a *little* concrete was involved... 'aight then, Vermont bands: Get online and vote! The teens of Straight Talk Vermont will bring Gravis, Burton, and Rossignol giveaways, refreshments, and a crazed assortment of youth-advocate agencies and vocal social and political youth groups to The Annex, below the main stage at Memorial, so everybody will find something worth checking out between bands. May is Burlington's Youth Advocacy Month, and Straight Talk Vermont's Youth Power Showcase will bring all the positive hookups together in one place. A Hip-Hop/R&B DJ will lay down grooves and Straight Talk VT will have refreshments for sale. Supported by OVX, Ben & Jerry’s, Burton Snowboards, Gravis Footwear, & Rossignol. Doors open at 5pm and the music begins at 6pm sharp. Tickets are $10 US and are available from the Memorial Auditorium Annex box office (lower level) beginning an hour before showtime; at Pure Pop Records and Tapes in downtown Burlington; through all Flynn Regional Box Office outlets (with non-refundable service charge) or charge to credit card by phone by calling 86-FLYNN; online at http://www.flynncenter.org; at Peacock Music in Plattsburgh; and Sound Source in Middlebury. Listen to the Homebrew Show on 99.9 The Buzz for a chance to win tickets, too. The show is all-ages and substance-free. Memorial Auditorium is located at 250 Main Street, Burlington, VT. One hundred specially-burned commemorative compilation CD's of the Bang! bands will be given to the first fans through the door. THE BANG! is made possible by the support of 99.9 THE BUZZ (http://www.999thebuzz.com), our friends in the scene who help us get word out about our amazing local music.

FLAT STANLEY = ADVANCE MUSIC BUZZ HOMEBREW HIGH SCHOOL BAND SEARCH WINNERS!
FLAT STANLEY (http://www.flatstanley.4t.com) are the winners of a $500 Advance Music (http://www.advancemusicvt.com) gift certificate, six hours of studio time and a produced CD from EMP studios, a band photo, and a headlining slot in the lineup at THE BANG! They took the crown at the annual high school band competition we all know and love, put together by the crayzee crew of 99.9 The Buzz. Six finalists played fifteen-minute sets on the Higher Ground (http://www.highergroundmusic.com) stage last Sunday, May 11. Every one of them had amazing talent: YOURS TRULY, ABBOTT HAYS, PHOX, THE FIELD VENUE, and THE SUBSTITUTION PLAN. Second Place went to Yours Truly and Third to The Substitution Plan. Look for pics from photog Nina Van Zandt soon on the BHW site! The finalists were judged on songwriting skillz, musical ability, and presentation, meaning not only did they do some kind of amazing job during the show but they also have their "stuff" together. BHW sends respect to all the finalists, and congrats to FLAT STANLEY!

NEW APPLE XSERVE AT BHW: THANK YOU SMALL DOG!!!
Thanks to the jaw-dropping generosity of Small Dog Electronics (http://www.smalldog.com), we're now serving the Big Heavy World web site from a new *ultrasexy* heavymetal Apple XServe. From this mind-bending good fortune we'll be creating a new rock-solid techno-mothership for all the public databases, photos, and Web shiznit that's at the heart of our work to preserve and promote Vermont's original music. Expect an alarming warm glow from all the technophiles here at BHW that get to *touch* the XServe. Get your groove on at http://www.apple.com/xserve and buy Mac stuff at http://www.smalldog.com - they've been rocking our world for years and are amazing people in general - they match donations to SEVEN charities. As a bonus, the XServe allows our current G4 server to slide over to our OVX-supported digital video crew to edit their VT Straight-Edge documentary on this year. Woo-hoo! And Woo-Hoo again!!!

BHW THANKS...!
Thanx this time 'round to Chris Maynard of btownsound (http://www.btownsound.com) for help patching our PC back together. When he's done we'll have a community "burner" box. Thanks to Dawn at Small Dog (http://www.smalldog.com) for being so kind to us. She (and Small Dog) are our *angels*. SERIOUSLY. Thanks to Simon Plumpton at the Humane Society for helping us adopt Cracker, our new loud (like us!) feathered office friend. Thanks out to Mike Trombley and Arty Lavigne for the invite to be a part of the Advance Music/Buzz Homebrew High School Band Search again this year - we feel the love. Thanks also to Matt Grasso for doing up the BANG! promos when we know how BIZZY he is in Buzzland. Thanks (in this issue and next!!!!) to Bruce Wilson at Straight Talk Vermont. He's a blessing to the kidz of this town and everybody should know it.
