242 MAIN'S MONSTERFEST RETURNS
It's baaaaccckkk! It's bigger than that freakin' star wars movie. It's louder than a blender full of power tools. It's MONSTERFEST, July 5th and 6th at the Memorial Annex! This year the 'Fest will be only two days, but 242 Main has packed so many bands in you'll feel like you were kidnapped for a week, beaten, and left in the desert with only scorpions to eat. Well... maybe not that last part, but it's gonna rock. And for only $22 at the door (price covers both days, $20 advance) it's cheaper than a bottle of water at the Warped tour. Festivities begin at noon each day, don't be late or you'll miss: FRIDAY 7/5: SHADOWS FALL (http://www.shadowsfall.com); ISIS (http://www.hydrahead.com/isis); BLOODLET (http://www.bloodletmusic.com); TAKING BACK SUNDAY (http://www.takingbacksunday.com); PIG DESTROYER (http://www.relapse.com/high/relapse/pig/index.html); THE DAMN PERSONALS (http://damnpersonals.com); GARRISON (http://garrisonkills.com); FAIRWEATHER (http://www.fairweatherva.com); NEVER SURRENDER; UNEARTH; FOUND DEAD HANGING; SKY CAME FALLING; THE BREAK; HASTE; MURDERER'S ROW; LITTLE LEAGUE (http://www.littleleaguepa.com); EMMANUEL.7 (http://www.societyofthewrench.com); SUICIDE NOTE (http://www.suicidenote.net); ORANGE ISLAND (http://www.orangeisland.net); THE RISE (http://www.riserock.com); THE STATIC AGE (http://www.thestaticage.com); and two more local acts to be announced. CATHERINES (http://www.eyeballrecords.com). For more information check out http://www.monsterfestvt.com. Tickets are available online at http://www.flynncenter.org/regional/monster.htm or by calling (802) 863-5966 but we sincerely hope instead you'll make sure to buy tickets from your favorite local band - whoever sells the most gets a slot on the lineup, so it's a pretty deep way to support. Call 242 Main at (802) 862-2244 about which bands are vending the tix. The show is produced and presented by 242 Main and sponsored by OVX (Our Voices XPosed, http://www.ovx.org) and Burlington Parks & Recreation.

BUZZSAW REVS UP FOR FALL: CHEAP COLLEGE RADIO MAILING
Big Heavy's seasonal mailing of local CD's to college radio stations is now open for business for the fall semester. From now through September we'll be gathering local releases, 200 copies at a time, to send together to 200 college radio stations across the states. If your band's got 200 CD's and $200 in the piggybank, bring 'em on and help us help you by getting your discs to college radio as cheap as can be. All bands involved get station locations and phone numbers to do your own tracking. So D.I.Y. it hurts, right? Help represent what's up with the Vermont music scene and get your disc to the stations that are most likely to dig it. Call Jim at (802) 865-1140 or redshift@bigheavyworld.net, or just come by the Big Heavy office at 215 College St., third floor (over Pure Pop in Burlington).
VERMONTMUSICSHOP: STEPH PAPPAS EXCLUSIVE!
The brand new CD release from STEPH PAPPAS, '3 Wishes', is now available online at http://www.vermontmusicshop.com, and it's the only online shop you'll find it in!!! Steph's soulful, country blues-infused "wimmin-style" acoustic folk has long spiked a corner of Burlington's music and '3 Wishes' keeps the faith with her long-standing fans. The CD was produced by Steph with engineer Horace Williams, Jr. at Little Castle Studio in Starksboro, VT. Graphic design was by Gotham City Graphics in Burlington - the disc is beautiful inside and out. Wicked to get caught up in lyric stories that take place at the Tunbridge Fair or City Hall Park - Steph really brings it home, with sugar and salt. <<< VERMONTMUSICSHOP.COM UPDATE >>> Big Heavy World's online consignment store is still the world's largest selection of Vermont-made music as far as we know. Local musicians, please help us represent Vermont music by selling your CD here! Contact Dave Donegan at musicshop@bigheavyworld.net Thanks to Scully Interactive the store is now database driven - so music fans can search for your music by genre, band and album name. Recent arrivals at http://www.vermontmusicshop.com include CD's by NINJA DEATH SQUAD, STEPH PAPPAS, LANGHORNE SLIM WITH CHARLES BUTLER, and 13TH CHAIR.
BHW PASSES THE GRAVY: FREE COMPUTER ACCESS FOR LOCAL MUSICIANS:
Thanks to inconceivably generous donations by Jager Di Paola Kemp, Sonique, and others we've now got a 600MHz PC online in the main room and a Power Mac set up for graphics, with an open invitation to local musicians to partake of them at will. It's a growing resource center, slowly coming together for a while and now ready for email-checking, poster-making, CD-burning fun. Bring a ZIP disc to use the Mac for graphics. Call us at 865-1140 to make sure someone's here when you want to come by or test your luck and pop in at 215 College St., third floor (over Pure Pop) any time, though evenings are best to find us nocturnal-types lurking.
BUZZ HOMEBREW SPARKS UP
Burlington bands stand and salute: Here's your call for CD's and demos for the Buzz Homebrew Show. New Homebrew DJ Sparky is banging pots and we're helping him get the word out that fresh local music is welcome at the Buzz studio... Email him at sparkybuzz@aol.com or send your music to The Buzz Homebrew Show, P.O. Box 999, Burlington, VT 05402. Tell Sparky "Big Heavy sent you..." (but leave out the part about our footprint on your ass) :)
2000+ LIVE CONCERT PHOTOS NOW SEARCHABLE AT BHW
Youdathunk we'd be hip enough to make our gallery of thousands of live local performance pics searchable before now, but it took the generosity of volunteer crewpeeps Irving Rabin (MAILBOX, http://www.suprpickle.com ), Janell Ciemiecki, Max Gregor, and Al Nemethy to actually get the damn thing together. Janell, Max and Al spent *weeks* copying info off the old html pages and into the new database, and Irving built the PHP/mySQL backend. Now you can search it for band names, venues of shows, photographers, show dates, and more. Hit it at http://www.bigheavyworld.com/paparazzi.html.
BHW HOMEPAGE SURGERY: STITCHES COME OUT...
There's been minor alterations to the BHW homepage... here's hoping you don't choke when you check them out. New animated navigation links; new links that go directly to event pages (still being built); link straight to the newspage and web cam. We're collecting suggestions for improvements to the site and with help from volunteers like Irving Rabin (MAILBOX, http://www.superpickle.com) we should be sliding gracefully into a cross-platform-compatible future... Yeah. What HE said. Let us know if you've got hints or tips for us, redshift@bigheavyworld.net.
PUNK ROCK DRIVE-IN, HELLBENDER HALLOWEEN:
Here's a whisper in your ear about the insidious Halloween we've got stirring... Prepare to be boiled alive in Burlington's heaviest sounds at Big Heavy's annual HELLBENDER, Friday November 1 at Higher Ground... The Day of the Dead. More info to come, and a web site. Pencil September 14, 2002 as your official PARTY DAY and haul it to the St. Albans Drive-In for an afternoon of punk and indie music and a night of severely *different* drive-in movies. We're busting to pull it all together, so if we pull down the sponsorships to make it happen we'll be letting you know.
FRESH BLOOD AT THE BIG HEAVY BAT CAVE:
Ben Rosenzweig & Liz Daly fall in from UVM to pick up a couple photojournalism internships. Tyson Valyou (13TH CHAIR, http://www.13thchair.com) is coming on to pick up some Paparazzi slack as well. Jesse Chamberlain (13TH CHAIR, http://www.13thchair.com) assumes the Page Gawd role with the Band Guide and is busting through a major update. Max Gregor is taking over the Streamery (Live Concerts) page, and Nate Meunier (NINJA DEATH SQUAD, http://www.geocities.com/ninjadeathsquad) is all over the place. Liz Grunberg joins the video crew, and Adam Popick (SUBSIDE) is easing into things. Fat "welcome-backs" to Manu Sachdeva and Mike Williams after time away.
BIG HEAVY THANKS TO:
Big Heavy thanks the bands of the June 10th BHW benefit show, first in the Spine Church series: PREVENT FALLS, WHIPPERSNAPPER, BLIND LUCK MUSIC (http://www.blindluckmusic.com), & YOURS TRULY (http://www.yourstruly.moonfruit.com). Good show, great bands... Thanks to the production crew too, including sound engineer George Webb who filled in for Sergei. Thanks to Irving Rabin (MAILBOX, http://www.superpickle.com), new crewguy, for body-slamming a new PHP/mySQL admin section onto the site and set up our searchable Paparazzi section. Thanks to Pa Lockridge (Jim's dad) for tossing the video crew a phat tripod. Thanx to Jesse Chamberlain (13TH CHAIR, http://www.13thchair.com) for laying into the BHW Band Guide, slapping it silly and bringing it up to date for everybody. Damien Thibault, long-time BHW crewdude, and Janell Ciemiecki for dragging some new computers in. Thanks to Eric Smith (GNUTAR, http://www.gnutar.com) for polishing up some new UNIX broadcasting machines. Should have one installed at Radio Bean straightaway. Thanks to the complete strangers who put a free electric fan out by the road for us to grab. We're even psyched it's aqua.
