LOCAL MUSIC NEWS:

JENN KARSON RELEASES CD TONIGHT!!!
Jenn Karson releases the long awaited Bad Ju Ju CD tonight at Red Square! Ten tracks of sweetly savage pop; tender layers of lightly sugared vocals with a complex glaze of insightful melancholy. Jenn Karson and Bad Ju Ju serve it up hot! Red Square is at 136 Church Street in Burlington.

BIG HEAVY WORLD BENEFIT BASH 2001
Five years in the making, this overdue sequel to our first big Bash in 1996 is crashing down on us tomorrow night, FRIDAY THE 13TH at Higher Ground! Come support BHW and enjoy the broad-spectrum radiation of FIVE SECONDS EXPIRED, WRECKINGHORN, S.T.M.P., THE MAGIC IS GONE, NINJA DEATH SQUAD, SUFFER THE MASSES, and ABSOLUTE ZERO. The bands are giving it up to support Big Heavy World - please come give it up for them! A bonus: we're bringing the boom box and headphones so you can personally check out BHW's upcoming 242 Main benefit CD. We'll be packing the master, and it's a rocker. All our other local music compilation CDs will be available on the merch table - good browsin', and a local music history lesson as well. Tix are $8, doors open at 7pm and the early show kicks off at 8pm. ALL-FRICKIN-AGES! Sponsored by masters of our universe: ADVANCE MUSIC CENTRE

BRUTAL MUSIC SHOWCASE: HELLBENDER 8/4 AT HIGHER GROUND
If you don't have last year's HELLBENDER seared into your consciousness, you won't want to miss this one... CHAINSAWS.AND.CHILDREN, TORSION, PRISONER 13, MORE MACHINE THAN MAN, SERENADE TO NOTHING, and more... with a double-inoculation of multimedia overload: two walls of video, LIVE QUAKE 3 BLOODSPORT by the region's best (and nastiest) players; and Clown Crew's 'Proven Ground' XTREME STREETBIKE VIDEO. Vermont's own psychobikers will make you drop your jaw, no lie. Tix $8, Doors 7pm, music starts at 8pm, ALL AGES. This show comes with a parental advisory for language and more... Sponsored by ADVANCE MUSIC CENTRE.

BHW'S INDIECON 8/18: FILM, MUSIC, AND CIVIC SLAPDOWN
Why is this newzrag coming to you a day before a big event? Because we're slackers? Not quite (tho we do forget to feed the office mice now and then...). We're just nuts-to the wall these days with projects, including: INDIECON August 18 at the new Flynn Space (downstairs from the Flynn Theatre). From 1pm to 1am we'll be hosting a buffet of mini-music-conference morsels. Check this: First, Andrew Huff from CEDO (Community and Economic Development Office) will explain HOW BURLINGTON CITY GOVERNMENT WORKS... in terms we can all understand. Point being to give all of us the power to change the way things work if we happen to disagree with the system. Then, a moderated panel of the people closest to the subject of ALL-AGE SHOWS IN DOWNTOWN BURLINGTON will give us the behind-the-scenes scoop. New city rules have altered that landscape a little bit... we'll hear why from City Hall, and discuss what's good, what's bad, and what could be changed (if necessary) to improve the situation. Confirmed panelists include Asst. City Attorney Gene Bergman, Club Metronome/Red Square Owner Jack O'Brien; Julia Austin from Zola Turn; Chris Valyou from Wreckinghorn; Richard Bailey from 242 Main, and more to come. THEN: TWO INDEPENDENT MUSIC DOCUMENTARY FILMS: 'THE TARGET SHOOTS FIRST' AND 'N.Y.H.C.' ('New York Hard Core'). Check the indieCon web page (below) for details about these critically acclaimed movies. (They DON'T suck). THEN: DYSFUNKSHUN; THE HALOGENS; SKASQUATCH; DAY OF RECKONING; SUICIDE SPRING; CANDID DAYDREAM (Syracuse NY); and GNUTAR (their debut) all lay down their own law at a Queen City rockout. Come help us break in this cool shiny art space, get a civic education you can and WILL use, suck up some indie film culture, and glom some of Burlington's finest music, all in one place, in one day. Grab tix for $10 at the Flynn Box Office (Call 86-FLYNN). It's ALL AGES (duh), and proceeds will help us keep this kind of event coming. The whole story is coming together at http://www.bigheavyworld.com/events/indiecon/. Sponsored by ADVANCE MUSIC CENTRE and ORANGE RECTANGLE LABS.

BURLINGTON PUNK ROCK NEEDS YOU!!
