Big Heavy World Newzrag #16 - May 6, 2001
Burning Down the House

The next few weeks are big ones here at Big Heavy, with the Buzz HOMEBREW HIGHSCHOOL BAND PLAY-OFFS, upcoming record releases and many good local shows. Spring is here, and Burlington is exploding. Here comes the heat. Send ice. Oh, and by the way, this marks the beginning of a new era for the BHW Newzrag. Former editor and worst enemy of the bad sandwich Joe Atherton has moved on to bigger and badder things. From now on, the Newzrag will be brought to you by Ethan Covey. Let's get used to each other; it should be loads of fun.

LOCAL MUSIC NEWZ:

WANNA WATCH THE BEST AREA HIGH SCHOOL BANDS BATTLE FOR A CHANCE AT STARDOM?
The ADVANCE HOMEBREW LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND SEARCH has narrowed down the competItors to six bands that will play Higher Ground on Monday, May 7. The six bands will play sets that will be judged by a panel of local musical geniuses, including BHW's very own Joe "Surly Critic Boy" Atherton. The winner of the contest will be bombarded by a pile of prizes including a $500 gift certificate to Advance Music, discounts on CD production costs through Big Heavy, a free day of recording at West Digital Studios, aid in getting their band heard far and wide on the 'net by bigheavyworld.com, and free tix to ALL Big Heavy shows this year. The bands that will be battlin' for the prize include: CHEUX (Burlington); BEN PATTON (Bakersfield); PART TIME HEROES (Swanton); TABLE 4:4 (Vergennes); OLD MAN'S FABLE (South Burlington); and SUICIDE SPRING (Charlotte). These are some of the best young bands in the area and they need your support in making their Rock and Roll dreams come true. Doors open at 6pm, it's an all-ages show, costs only three little dollars to get in, and last year's champs WRECKINGHORN will close the show, skankin' the night away! Keep an eye out for the Big Heavy World table, which will be manned by our extremely knowlegable & sexy staff and be stocked full of interesting BHW and local music info.

TAME THE MONSTER!!
Believe it or not, (and oh please do), SUFFER THE MASSES, and PRISONER 13 are both offering tickets to the MONSTERFEST festival for cheaper than a case of airplane glue. While box office price is about 48 clams, the three-day pass to all shows is available from STM and P13 for ONLY 45 bucks. Check out http://www.geocities.com/suffertm/tix.html or, http://www.angelfire.com/vt/crookedcore/ for more details. Hell, buy two... take yer mom! The show begins at noon each day, and over three dozen bands will rock Memorial Auditorium before the clouds clear. On the day of the shows, tix will be $20 bucks a pop, so order now. The MONSTERFEST festival is taking place June 1-3 at 242 MAIN in Burlington. All proceeds go to benefit 242 MAIN, which is Burlington's own all ages/non-profit teen center and performance space. THE ADVENTURES OF A ROCK AND ROLL MAGIC BOY

Issue #10 of Y.A.H. includes a 14 page, color Magic Boy comic depicting a James Kochalka Superstar performance in Hultsfred, Sweden. YOU ARE HERE also contains a free cd boasting two exclusive JKS tracks - OZZY AND I, (from the upcoming release DON'T TRUST WHITEY), and SHOW RESPECT TO MICHAEL JACKSON, recorded live in Hultsfred. YOU ARE HERE is distributed by Criminal Records in Atlanta, Georgia and is avaliable FREE at fine independent record stores, including Pure Pop, right here in sunny Burlington.

RADIO FREE BEAN
Radio Bean, coffee shop and ultra-hip hangout, is sporting a long list of local musicians playing weekly Big Heavy-produced acoustic shows. Some future performances are: Josh Magis 5/14, Larry Flynn 5/21, Cactus Highway 6/4, and the Andrew Smith Transmission's debut performance on 6/11. All shows begin at 8pm. All shows are free. And all shows are broadcast live online at bigheavyworld.com. Radio Bean is located at 8 North Winooski Avenue in downtown Burlington.

WE LOVE EVERYONE!!!
Big Heavy World would like to send out mountains of thanks to the many people that have helped us out at shows, benefits, with office maintenance, equipment repair, and generally aided in keeping the Big Heavy World turning in the past few weeks. Many thanks to BAD JU JU, HELEN KELLER MUSIC, and CHIN HO! for playing at BHW's Electric Cabaret benefitting the Women's Rape Crisis Center, April 27, and to everyone who came and supported the cause. Awesome acoustic performances were delivered by all to help raise money for an incredible and very important organization. Thanks to Alex "Jeff" Tripp and Damien Thibault for manning the BHW table at the show. Thanks to WRECKING HORN, BLIND LUCK, THE BAZOOKAS, and SKASQUATCH for rocking out at the 242 Main benefit show for Big Heavy on April, 26. And, of course, our sweetest thanks to Joe Atherton and Sarah Leib for making the thing happen. You make this Heavy World go round! Thanks to James Kathary @ Retronics.net for the deal on the new broadcasting machine. Thanks to Jim Tanner and Tri State Wrestling for spinning BHW's Tonic Two and chainsaws.and.children discs at the Rutland show (Fok Yeah!). Wow, quite a list o' thanks, but things here at BHW are going well and we couldn't come close to pulling it all off without the help of those mentioned above, and the many others that give their time and devotion to BHW and the VT music scene. Keep it comin'!!!

BHW RECORD LABEL NEWS:

CHAINSAWING THROUGH VEGAS
Burlington industrial anarchist psycho-freaks chainsaws.and.children are deep into the planning of a cross-country blitzkrieg set to shock the country from Vegas all the way back to B-town. Kicking off the riot is a two day set performing at the world-famous DefCon hacker convention in glorious Las Vegas. One of the largest gatherings of the technology underground, DefCon drew an estimated 4,200 hackers, geeks, and computer terrorists (can we say that?...) last year to the three day convention. Hosted at the Alexis Park Hotel and Resort, DefCon is sure to be an even larger undertaking than ever before, and this year chainsaws.and.children will be there to provide a soundtrack for the mayhem. The party takes place July 13-15. For more info check out http://www.defcon.org/ On the way out to Vegas, and back after the fire burns out, chainsaws.and.children will be making stops at a dozen other venues with dates TBA. Stay tuned to the Newzrag as more are announced. Finally, the kiddies will roar through Common Gound in Brattleboro before crashing back to Winooski for the massive BIG HEAVY WORLD HELLBENDER with Scissorfight (NH), Battershell (N.Y.C.), Torsion, Prisoner 13 (Barre), and Superkollider (MA) on Saturday, July 28. Tour booking by Pat "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" May with support from Heather "Can I Have Denver?" Smith and Jim "The Hammer" Hadeka.

CHIN HO! LOCAL SHOWS
While usually the busiest band in the universe, CHIN HO! has been enjoying a much needed spring (and summer and fall and winter) break. Vocalist/guitarist Andrew Smith will be debuting his side project THE ANDREW SMITH TRANSMISSION at Radio Bean (8. North Winooski Ave., Burlingon), on June 11. Stop by and welcome Andrew back to town, or catch the live broadcast online, here in the bigheavyworld.com Streamery.

FOR THE MUSIC MAKERS:

R U IN ROTATION?
Big Heavy World's live online stream of Vermont music has blown up to monstrous proportions - There are now over 2700 tracks by local musicians continuously streamed over the Internet. Until now all of the music has come from our own CD library, yet we know that there are many of you out there with new digital tracks that deserve to be heard. If you want your studio quality tracks to be included in our online programming, send your MP3 download URL, (not the file itself), to groundzero@bigheavyworld.com Attn. Radio God (A.K.A. Joe "Smiley" Atherton...) Also, if you have a CD that we don't already have, send it to us so we can get ya' heard. BHW's online music stream was honored with the distinction of being Yahoo! Internet Life's online radio station of the day this past January, all 'cos of musicians like you!

ORIGINAL MUSIC NEEDED FOR CHILDREN'S FILM
NYC Animator and filmmaker Johnathan Cohen is searching for musicians interested in supplying original music for his kids' film "Johnny the Amazing Firetruck." The animated picture is about, (oddly enough), a boy who wants to be a firetruck. The film is already garnering festival acceptances, and was just shown at the NYU Latin Film Festival on April 27. Johnathan has two general feelings as to the direction of the soundtrack: Soft and dramatic for a "depressing and sorrowful" mood, or quirky and ambient along the lines of more goofy children's soundtracks. If any artists are interested, email Johnathan at ninjohnny@hotmail.com Or send demos to Johnathan Cohen, 387 6th Ave. Apt.2, New York, NY 10014. Tell him Big Heavy sent you!
