Zune vs Ipod

Postby Ricky on Fri Jan 18, 2008 11:06 pm

So i have been looking into a zune player recently.

i do not know anyone who has one so i cant ask them how it is or fiddle with it to see if it is something i would like.

I was wondering if anyone had a zune and could tell me the advantages to them oppose to an ipod

a compare and contrast if you will.

Any info would be a great help.

Ipod, just cuz no one has zunes, and with the wifi capabilities of ipods.....why not? as far as ipods holding up, if you use it everyday, and do drop it too often, it will last you years. I've had an ipod with video for like....1.5 years and had a mini thats lasted....3 or 4.

PS. i have a friend who has a zune, he wishes it were an ipod.

I had a nano that died just sitting on my desk overnight after a couple of months. I was too lazy to get it fixed. I also had a nano that went through the laundry (not recommended.) At least the light comes on when I try to turn it on, which means it still works better than the other one.

I've got a 40GB 3rd-gen iPod that's coming up on 4 years old, I think. I use it every day and it's never had any problems (caveat: I take really good care of my stuff). The battery life probably isn't what it once was, but it's good enough, and I almost never use it in a situation when I can't plug it into either my computer, an AC adapter, or a car adapter for power.

The Zune is bigger and heavier than an iPod, it has a lot less storage space (unless you compare it to one of the flash-memory-based iPods), and I've read that getting the Zune software to work on your PC can be a real pain in the ass. Also, the Zune Marketplace or whatever they call their online music store is weird -- you can't just buy a song, you have to buy points and then trade the points for a song... but the blocks you buy points in don't match up with the number of points you need for a song, so you almost always end up with extra points that you've paid for but can't use. Also, the wireless music sharing on the Zune is really lame because it adds DRM to any song you send someone, even ones that didn't originally have DRM (like, say, a song you wrote and recorded yourself).

If you really want an alternative to an iPod, look into the Sandisk Sansa. I've heard good things about those. But personally I'd still go with an iPod because the interface is great and the iTunes Store is the best online music store if you're into that sort of thing.

I have no experience with Zune, but I do have an ipod mini. i love the interface and the thing is built tough as nails. The battery did shit out, but I just bought a new battery and they are super easy to change. I have a friend who has a sansa(8gb flash). Battery life is great. The sound is almost as good as an ipod (but def not as good) and he spilled water all over it and managed to get it to work. I absolutely hate the neumatic wheel on the thing though. Piece of crap. Fot the money though, those are some pretty decent players.

I have owned a Zune (30 gig) for over a year. I've never had any issues with the software and I've installed it more than once (unrelated hard drive crash). I chose the Zune because we have two ipods and the software drove me crazy with the updates to the ipod software and Quicktime's constant take over of my computer.

We have two Zunes on two PC's. All works great.

I've been thinking about getting one of the Creative Zen players next time I'm in need. Sure most of them are ugly as hell, but you don't even need software to update them. Just drag songs onto it in windows explorer or the finder.

zune pwns ipod

I am buying the 2nd Gen 80gb on Wednesday. Both the 80 gb ipod and the 80gb zune are $250 so either way you will be spending the same amount of money. The zune offers an FM tuner which is an awesome feature. I personally enjoy having a larger screen (also partially scratch resistant, and with 80gb you will most likely have space to upload multiple movies, so a larger screen would be more beneficial. I would say the zune is not only equal to all of the features of an ipod but in most categories it surpasses the ipod. The only one up ipod has is that the iTunes marketplace is better than the zune marketplace...that isn't a reason for me to buy an ipod.

Go with the zune, the design is much cooler.

Oh yeah microsoft is better than apple too. I will debate this with anyone. Linux is great too, but out of apple and microsoft based systems, PCs pwn apple.

Ipod's more popular than the zune, but because of that, microsoft's tryng harder to push their 'ipod killer'. It's good apple came back with the ipod because it's pushed microsoft too. A monopoly over anything makes the leader lazy and stop trying.

i got the zune. i love the big screen, and the personalization you can do. (if you go online, you can get cutesy custom art on the back and stuff, it's pretty neat!) Iin March, microsoft introduced the XNA software development of the Xbox for the zune, so now people are developing programs for it. It's only been around for 4 months, but there are already a ton of games which have been created. people have been working on games, organizers, instant Messengers, Emulators, and there's the few who are really want a web browser (it'll be HELL to design that, probably won't happen, but meh)

* iPod: 2.4″ x 4.1″ x 0.41″
* Zune: 2.4″ x 4.25″ x 0.5″ (not much bigger)

ipod vs zune? I've had an ipod and in my experience, you end up buying one every year or so with not the greatest features other than slim design (although the new touch is pretty cool but damn expensive and not HUGE amounts of space but probably more than you need for at least music)...... Zune, AWESOME screen, excellent menus and display but thats about it.

I am thankful that I chose the Creative Zen Vision. It's not the slimmest thing in the world but it pwns. You can instant record on it with the touch of the shortcut button. This is my favorite feature because as a musician, it's so easy to save an idea/riff that you don't want to forget on the fly and also good for practicing improvising.
You can delete files right on the zen itself. It has the best EQ i've ever seen along with a separate bass boost if you have nice headphones. The battery is much better in my experience than the ipod and the zune. I've had mine for two years and it still holds its charge great (unlike some ipods) You can also make custom bacgrounds and menus if you're all about that. It doesn't have touch screen, but why risk scratching/smudging your screen? It also has a lot of little cool playlist and song rating features. Theres no cool catchy little games I'm sad to say. Maybe you can hack them on? I haven't tried.

creative does that with most of their players. We used to use my old 128mb creative MuVo to record dog days practices. I never knew how much I'd miss a feature like that until i fucked my MuVo up. Weird thing is, It;s still the best sounding mp3 player I've owned. Even better than my Ipod.
